Camp Arcadia is blessed to have engaged and passionate supporters. On Oct. 4 we had almost 70 people join in on a webinar addressing the proposed beach erosion project. If you missed it and would like to hear the coastal engineers – Bill Brose , Jack Cox and Nate Novak of SmithGroup JJR, who designed the project, answer questions about the proposed plan click here.
Camp continues to develop the beach project and work towards getting a permit for the project. We have hired SmithGroup JJR to create construction drawings to the level needed to get a permit for the project. The LCA Board decided to pursue a permit before the LCA membership vote on the campaign in November for the following reasons:
- If the lake levels continues to rise our situation could become more urgent.
- Securing a permit could take 6 – 12 months.
- There are lake and land surveys that need to be done, and if we waited to the spring, it would delay the ability to create construction drawings for the permit by almost 6 months.
So, to kick off the next phase of developing construction drawings for a permit, the SmithGroup engineers visited Camp to review the conceptual plans on September 20. They met with Camp staff, members of the LCA Board, interested LCA members, and lakefront cottage colony owners and toured the Camp beach and discussed the proposed plan. (This was SmithGroup’s second visit to Camp, they had been here last November as they began work on our project.) During this visit the engineers answered a lot of questions, many of which are reflected during the beach webinar.
All of our building and beach plans are conceptual and as we further develop them they will change a bit. We work very hard to present the most complete plans to you to review and take seriously the feedback you provide. As a result of your feedback and new information we receive, the conceptual plans will change as we further develop them. We will keep you informed as we progress.
The conceptual plans for the beach project will be slightly adjusted from what we have proposed, but will not change significantly. These changes, based on feedback from supporters this summer, include:
- The stepped revetment planned for the patio overlook is going to be removed and the railing and cement overlook will continue across that area. The stepped revetment was perceived to be an attractive nuisance for smaller children. We will also be working to include more green space in that overlook area.
- Develop the landscape site plan to better integrate the pocket beach with the proposed Inn addition and the Chapel on the Beach – this would include a walkway to the beach from the Inn and the Chapel and create space for a permanent fire pit area.
Thank you for your love and support of Camp Arcadia’s ministry. These are exciting times and we have an amazing opportunity to invest in the future of Camp Arcadia. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Chip May, executive director, at(231) 889-4361 or chip@camp-arcadia.com.
