We’re breaking down a few myths about serving on Camp Arcadia’s Summer Staff. Serving at Camp for the summer is a “can’t miss” experience that’s valuable for our seasonal staff – personally AND professionally!
Myth #3: "I can't work at Camp because it doesn't fully align with my future career path."
Caleb Mull, Summer Staff 2023 & 2024, helps us bust this myth.
How was working at Camp Arcadia beneficial to you?
Working at Camp Arcadia was very beneficial to me in many ways. First, I got to make several lifelong friends, spend the summer living and working with them, and grow in my faith all the while. Additionally, working at Camp has also helped me grow my personal and professional skills.
Some may think a job at Camp is not beneficial for my future as an Industrial Engineering student. However, this is not the case. Working as Camp’s Sous Chef taught me a lot about kitchen work, but most importantly, I learned management, leadership, and team-building skills. I also had the opportunity to make several process improvement changes in the kitchen using the engineering skills I’ve learned in my classes. I was then able to take all these things and write about them on my resume from an engineer’s point of view. This helped me get noticed by a company, complete a successful interview, and accept a job offer. From January to August 2025, I will be working at Bridgestone Tires as a Chemical Engineering Co-Op.
Why do you think your work at Camp Arcadia stood out on your resume?
At first, kitchen work seems like it would not be helpful for the resume of an industrial engineering student. However, industrial engineering is all about improvement, so it can actually apply to almost any industry. It’s all about what you write on your resume and how you choose to talk about it. The parts of the Sous Chef role that stood out on my resume were not the kitchen skills, but rather the management and leadership skills that I had to use daily. Through my time at Camp, I learned so much about how to work as part of a team, and I think that translates well into the workforce.
