Translating the Bible: From Luther to Today
Translations of the Bible have led to martyrdom (William Tyndale, John Rogers), but they have also dramatically contributed to renewed faith and church life. Few translations have been as effective as Luther’s translation of the Bible into German in 1522 or the King James Version in 1611. Why are there so many translations today? How can this variety help in understanding the text?
Ralph Klein, Chicago, IL, Dean
Ralph Klein is professor emeritus of Old Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. He edits Currents in Theology and Mission and is working on a two-volume commentary on 1 and 2 Chronicles. His website, The Old Testament and the Ancient Near East (OT-studies.com), provides countless resources for understanding the Old Testament.
“Gatherings”
According to the Gospels, people were gathered around Jesus during his earthly ministry for a variety of purposes: gathered to learn, gathered in fellowship, gathered for rest, gathered to be sent back into the world. Together we will explore several New Testament accounts of “gatherings,” seeking to be encouraged and challenged in our own lives as gathered people of God.
Audrey West, Bethlehem, PA, Lecturer
Audrey West served as Associate Professor of New Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, where she continues to teach occasionally in the Doctor of Ministry program. A former swim coach and director of youth ministries, Audrey is an energetic teacher and engaging author, whose essays on biblical themes have appeared in national magazines ranging from Christian Century to Lutheran Woman Today.
